The Australian Dingo as we know it has been around for over two hundred years. The Dingo originally had been domesticated, but over the course of time have become a wild animal, and difficult to tame. In 1792 the Dingo was first given a scientific name - Canis antarcticus. Since that time, the Dingo has been studied and the scientific name has changed several times. Today, the Dingo has had several different scientific names including Canis familiaris dingo (a subspecies of the dog), Canis lupus dingo (a subspecies of the wolf), Canis dingo (its own subspecies) and Canis lupus familiaris dingo. The Dingo is a native of Australia, which lives in the wild. They bear a resemblance to a domestic dog as well as a wolf. However, they are wild animals who will attack other animals for food. Dingoes are located in all kinds of habitats, including the snow-covered mountain forests of Eastern Australia, dry hot deserts of Central Australia, and Northern Australia's tropical forest wetlands. Over the course of history the population of the Dingo has varied. At one point the population has flourished and Australia had a problem of Dingo overpopulation. However, in the years since, Dingoes have been hunted and now are on the endangered list. Dingoes are meat eaters and because of their wild nature they are natural hunters. They hunt and eat various types of livestock and mammals including sheep, lambs, rabbits, kangaroos and rats. The killing of livestock has been a problem among farmers for many years. The Dingo has been around for several hundred years and is a vital part of the Australian food chain. Even though they are predators and attack livestock, they also help keep the population of other animals in check. As long as the government keeps the hunting of Dingoes in check, the Dingo will continue to survive and thrive in Australia. · Canis Lupus Dingo · Dingo Species Summary · Dingo Facts and Information · Dingo Information · Classification of the Dingo · Dingo Species · Images of the Dingo · Dingo Quick Facts · Wild Dog Dingo · Dingo Habitat and Information · Australian Rainforest Dingo · Diet of the Dingo · Animal Planet: Dingo · Dingo Diet · Dingo Sanctuary · Dingo Information · Australian Dingo
