Since first appearing on the music charts in the early 1970’s, Olivia Newton-John has had a career as a singer, actress and an activist for many noble causes such as the environment and animal rights. Her career and life has had many highs and lows, but through it all she has been Australia’s and the world’s sweetheart. Olivia Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England on September 26, 1948. At the age of 6, Newton-John and her family moved to Melbourne, Australia, where her father got a job as Professor of German at Melbourne College. Olivia had a love of music, and at the age of 14 formed an all girl band with 3 of her school mates. Soon she was off performing on her own, appearing in local spots as well as appearing on local radio and television shows. In the mid 60’s she got her first big break by winning a talent contest. As the winner, Olivia won a trip to England where she would have a chance to showcase her music talent. In 1966, she recorded her first song in England for Decca Records. Despite being homesick, she remained in England and took her first steps towards a career in music. In 1971, she recorded her first album titled “If Not for you.” The album was very popular in England, and had some success in the United States as well. In 1973, Newton-John hit the charts with “Let Me Be There” reaching the Top 10 in the Pop, Country and Adult Contemporary charts. For the next several years she released several hits such as “If You Love Me”, “I Honestly Love You” and “Please Mr. Please.” In 1978, Olivia Newton-John’s career took a new direction – movies. She starred in the movie version of the Broadway hit “Grease”, which co-starred John Travolta. The musical was a huge hit, with many of the songs along with the album reaching the top of the chart. But her best commercial success came in 1981, when she released the album “Physical.” The title track for the album was number 1 on the music charts for 10 weeks. To date, this song still ranks among the biggest hits of all time. During most of the 80’s Newton-John took a break to raise a family, and occasionally released new music. However, she did not have the commercial successes she previously enjoyed. In 1992, an attempted comeback and tour was stopped when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, her cancer was discovered in the early stages and she has been treated and remains cancer free. However, the illness has given her a new focus and since then has worked as an advocate for breast cancer screenings for women. In addition, she has take on other issues that are close to her heart such as caring for the environment and work as an animal rights spokesperson. Olivia Newton-John still makes music, however, not as much as her earlier years. However, she has since become a tireless worker to raise funds and awareness for very worthwhile causes that are close to her.
