A toll road is a road that requires you to pay a fee to travel on it. Traditionally this has involved stopping at a toll point to pay this fee, however in recent times, an Electronic Toll Collection System has taken its place.

These tolling systems can be found in Australia's eastern states of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Tolling points are positioned within the metropolitan capitals of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Electronic or Visitor's passes are required for all toll roads within Australia. These generally need to be organised before travel, however methods to pay your tolls are available if you are not prepared in time. When hiring a car, be sure to ask at the depot upon pick-up and drop off of your vehicle. You will need to inform the depot of the toll roads you travelled on throughout the duration of your rental.

Victoria

The toll roads in Victoria can be found in and around the capital city of Melbourne. Citylink is one of the city's major travelling routes and has several tolling and entrance points.

A Citylink Pass is required for travel along both the Citylink and Eastlink tolling roads. If these cannot be purchased prior to travel, they may be purchased up to 3 days after travel.

E-tags and E-passes are also acceptable.

New South Wales

The toll points in New South Wales can be found in Sydney along the M2, M5, M7, Lane Cove Tunnel, Military Road E-Ramps, the Eastern Distributor, the Cross City Tunnel and the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Tunnel.

If you are planning on travelling on these toll roads, you will need to organise an e-tag. If you are not able to make these arrangements prior to travel, your number plate will be video recorded, and you will be able to make the payment at a later date.

Queensland

Queensland's toll roads in Brisbane have adopted a new tolling system that is known as GoVia. These toll roads can be found on the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges, Gateway Extension, Logan Motorway, Clem 7 and the Go Between Bridge.

There are no longer any cash toll booths, meaning a GoVia Tag or pass is required for all of these roads.
